    Branch responsibilities

    Environment & Decommissioning

    OG-ED has three sections that cover Environmental Policy and Regulation, Operations and Enforcement, and Decommissioning. The Policy and Regulation sections are split between Aberdeen and London.

    The Branch has general responsibility for dealing with pollution prevention and detection and emergency response in the event of a potential offshore pollution incident. The majority of policy activity is conducted under international agreements arising from the OSPAR Commission and EU.

    OG-ED is also responsible for the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental legislation such that UK oil and gas activity can proceed cost effectively, in an environmentally sound manner in the context of sustainability. We are here to ensure that the Department is not exposed to the possibility of successful legal challenge or negative press comment.

    Section responsibilities

    Environmental Policy Development

    This unit's focus is on developing and implementing new environmental policy and regulation, ensuring UK interests are fully represented in EU, international and national fora and that conclusions acceptable in terms of UK policy are achieved.

    Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with other national governments which ensure effective communication and understanding of UK aims and policies.

    Environmental Operations

    This units focus is on ensuring the implementation of environmental legislation by inspection and promoting compliance and, ensuring that new licence applicants have satisfactory procedures in place to operate in a manner, which reflects best environmental practice.

    Decommissioning

    This unit's focus is on ensuring decommissioning complies with international obligations, UK legislation and a balanced regard for safety, environmental, technical and economic considerations.

    The IT section acts as a service group to all the Oil and Gas branches covering database design and development, graphics, plotting, digitising and software consultancy. They handle liaison with various oil industry standards bodies, e.g. POSC, CIDAI.
