Results of 11th Onshore Licensing Round

1. The Licences are Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences, which is the type of Production Licence currently issued onshore. They are issued under the Petroleum Act 1998, and cover exploration for and production of oil and gas (though certain specific activities, including drilling and production, require further consents at the time). They do not remove the need for planning permission from the local authority, landowner consent or other permissions.

2. Alkane Energy UK Limited is oriented towards coal mine methane (CMM) - i.e. methane extracted from working or disused coalmines. All the other companies are oriented towards 'conventional' oil and gas. But the Petroleum Act does not distinguish between methane from these different sources.

3. Each Licence carries a Work Programme whose drilling component is a single-well 'Drill-or-Drop' commitment. Most also include seismic acquisition elements.
